China is a country relatively poor in conventional fossil energy, and its per capita share is less than 1/2 of the world average. Therefore, for China, vigorously developing and using renewable energy is an important strategic measure to optimize the energy structure, improve the environment, and promote sustainable economic and social development. China has a vast territory and varied terrain, which contains extremely rich renewable energy and huge development potential. Compared with Western developed countries, although China started late in the development and utilization of renewable energy and its technology is relatively backward, the government has paid great attention in recent years and adopted a series of legal, economic and technical measures to promote the rapid development of China’s renewable energy power generation industry. During the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, China promulgated the “Renewable Energy Law of the People’s Republic of China”, legally establishing the status of renewable energy development and utilization, and China’s renewable energy development has entered a new historical stage. During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, China further proposed seven key strategic emerging industries in the national strategic emerging industry development plan, including energy-saving and environmental protection industries, new energy industries, and new energy automobile industries. The “13th Five-Year Plan for Energy Development” was issued and implemented on December 26, 2016, and the development and utilization of renewable energy will continue to be encouraged. The 2019 National Energy Work Conference has been held. In terms of renewable energy development goals, the Chinese government has clearly proposed various energy development indicators for 2020, in which non-fossil energy accounts for 15% of total energy consumption.
The Chinese government attaches great importance to the innovation of renewable energy power generation technology and actively supports the construction of renewable energy technology parks and industrial parks. Beijing Future Science and Technology City is located in Changping District, Beijing, and has welcomed more than a dozen large-scale central enterprises, including State Grid, Huaneng Group, China Guodian, Shenhua Group, China Electronics, State Nuclear Power, and China National Building Materials. By gathering first-class talents and integrating scientific and technological resources, a number of cutting-edge technology research and development institutions will be built in strategic emerging fields such as energy conservation and environmental protection, high-end equipment manufacturing, new energy, new materials and new energy vehicles. The development and utilization of renewable energy plays a very important role in consolidating China’s energy supply foundation, optimizing China’s energy structure, and promoting the healthy development of China’s ecological environment. It is a strategic choice to resolve the contradiction between China’s energy supply and demand and achieve sustainable development. Looking ahead, China will have the following development opportunities in renewable energy power generation:
(1) China has abundant renewable energy resources for development and utilization.
(2) China’s demand for renewable energy is huge and the market is vast.
(3) The development of China’s renewable energy comes with a good development opportunity.
(4) The huge driving force of the market will promote the development of China’s new energy and renewable energy.
(5) The government will, as always, unswervingly support the development of China’s renewable energy industry.
